(More customer reviews)I work in a country that is sometimes difficult to find new original HP CB436A printer cartridges. I prefer to buy new original HP cartridges but many of them for sale here as new have actually been refilled, perhaps several times. These usually do not print very well. The HP CB436A cartridges cannot be refilled more than once or twice as the print quality degrades below my expectations (the toner starts putting smudges and streaks on the pages).
I can easily carry these toner bottles in my check-in baggage from the U.S. on an airplane, compared with printer cartridges that are now banned from airplanes due to security concerns. It also takes up less room in my check-in baggage than printer cartridges do.
I buy the new genuine HP CB436A cartridges locally when they are available and then refill them once or twice before replacing them with new genuine HP CB436A cartridges (when they become available again). This also substancially reduces my printer cartridge costs as the HP printer cartridges are quite expensive here.
The reset microchips that are included are helpful as they prevent the "Replace Printer Cartridge" messages from appearing until the toner becomes low again.
Having said that, there are some concerns about the process of refilling the CB436A cartridges that are not mentioned in the website. A person doing the refilling must be mechanically inclined as a ¾ inch hole must be put into the cartridge to refill it, while making sure no plastic pieces fall inside the cartridge. This is done best with a Toner Refill Kit Tool - Toner Hole Making Tool that melts a ¾ inch hole into the cartridge. This was not mentioned in the website so I didn't purchase one to bring back with me. I had to use a ¾ inch hole saw to drill the hole into the cartridge, holding it upside down to prevent plastic pieces from falling into the cartridge. Once the hole is made into the cartridge, the toner is poured into the cartridge and the hole covered with tape. The refilling process could be a bit messy as well. The second time the cartridge is refilled is much easier though, as only the tape covering the hole has to be removed and then put back after refilling.
Also, the refill instructions could be better. The single page instructions I received were minimal and the included picture of a printer cartridge showing where to put the hole didn't look the same as the cartridges I had. I also had to figure out the orientation of the reset microchip as well as the location where to drill the hole, as the instructions were not clear.
Now that I know better, I will purchase the Toner Hole Making Tool to bring back with me, along with more toner refill bottles.
So far I have not been able to refill the HP CB436A cartridges more than once before the streaking and smudging became unacceptable. The cartridge roller can be cleaned with a cloth to stop the streaking and smudging temporarily, but the cleaning becomes more frequent the more the cartidge is used. Putting a hole in the cartidge is a bit of work for only one refill.
