(More customer reviews)I started out buying new black ink cartridges for $13. Then, to save money, I would bring them to one of those places that refill them for about $8. Now, for just 8 cents worth of ink, I refill them myself.
I'm really kicking myself for not discovering this sooner. I do a lot of printing and, during the last 3 or 4 years I must have spent $1,000 for ink. A couple of times I inquired at Staples whether the refill kit they sell was a good thing. They told me that people didn't like them because they were too messy. (By the way, the refill kit sold at Staples is not a good value. You only get 3 ounces of ink for $20.)
Well, I finally checked out a couple of YouTube.com videos and saw how ridiculously easy it is to refill an ink cartridge. Basically, if you are a human being with opposable thumbs, you can refill an ink cartridge.
It's probably a good idea to wear some latex gloves and cover the area where you are working in case some ink gets away from you. However, if you do get any ink on your hands or counter top, some full strength bleach will remove it.
The only thing that this package doesn't have that you really kind of need, are three more syringes. They only include one. With only one syringe, it's impossible to clean it out sufficiently to not contaminate the color ink cartridge when you refill it. You really need a separate syringe for each of the three colors. (I haven't looked because I already had them, but I'm sure you can buy syringes online.)
Also not included, is a cleaning solution to clean your syringes. However, for this you can simply use alcohol. Even though I use a separate syringe for each color, I clean them after each use to prevent the ink residue from building up and eventually clogging the syringe.
IMPORTANT TIPS
Don't overfill the cartridge. Call Cartridge World or one of the other places that refill ink cartridges and ask them how much ink your particular cartridge takes. A safe rule of thumb is 5 milliliters. When refilling a color cartridge that holds all three colors (as opposed to a separate cartridge for each color), 2 milliliters in each of the three holes is a safe bet. Inject the ink slowly so that if the cartridge starts to overflow you can stop before the ink goes all over the place.
When you are finished refilling, wipe off the contact points at the bottom of the cartridge with a paper towel. Do this by swiping the cartridge (lengthwise) in one direction across the paper towel. This will accomplish two things. It will remove any excess ink, and it will prime the contacts with the new ink you just inserted.
In case you don't already know, the printer manufacturers don't want you refilling your ink cartridges because selling new cartridges is how they make most of their money. Therefore, a cat and mouse game has developed with the printer companies doing things to prevent a printer from printing when a refilled cartridge is inserted.
I'm not saying that you are definitely going to have a problem but if your printer refuses print after you install a refilled cartridge, here are some things you can do to solve the problem:
1- Keep an old empty cartridge around that has never been refilled. Take out the refilled cartridge and replace it with the old cartridge. Then, remove all the paper from the feeder tray so that there isn't any paper for your printer to print on. Now try to print a page. When you computer tell you that the printer is out of paper, take out the old cartridge and replace it with the refilled cartridge. Then put the paper back in and press the Resume Print button on your printer. This is what I do and it works like a charm with my HP printer.
2- Restart your computer.
3- Do a System Restore on your computer to a date before your cartridge ran out of ink.
4- If all else fails, uninstall and then reinstall your printer software. This will for sure solve the problem and get your printer printing again.
