Brother HL-1250 Laser Printer Review

The Brother HL-1250 monochrome laser printer works great up to one point. The carriage in the laser printer is susceptible to breaking if the paper gets jammed or is too thick like in card stock. It can break. It broke once under warranty; it broke a second time outside of warranty.

For professional-quality printing, the Brother HL-1250 laser printer offers crisp 1,200 x 600 dpi graphics resolution and a quick 12 ppm speed. The printer's speed and clarity make it ideal for both business and home printing requirements.

The HL-1250 features two adjustable paper cassettes for demanding workloads and 61 resident fonts for a variety of design options. You can use the face-up output tray, which holds up to 50 sheets, or the face-down output tray, which holds up to 100 sheets. Automatic e-mail printing software is included for convenient printing of e-mail messages at prescheduled times.
Upgrades and options can boost the power of the Brother HL-1250. You can increase the memory from the standard 4 MB to 36 MB, and an additional 250-sheet paper cassette is also available. --Emily Bakko

Brother MFC-210C Color Inkjet Multifunction Printer Review

Brother MFC-210C Color Inkjet Multifunction Printer

I got this today and I'm returning it tomorrow. The printer part is fine, but I do a lot of scanning and I am dumbfounded by what I discovered with this aspect of the machine. First off, when scanning you don't get a preview, you have no option of controlling the size of the scan, or the HSL or any other color/brightness control, nor can you control the dpi. You push the scan button and it scans the whole bed. If your object is smaller than the bed size, too bad. If you want something at 72 dpi (which is all any monitor can "see" so all you use for the web), too bad. If the colors aren't good, too bad. If there's a glare off of something you're scanning, too bad. No options are available. The files end up being large as they're the size of the bed and at 300dpi (the default).
When I first tried scanning and didn't get a preview window or any controls, I picked up the manual to figure out what was going wrong. Guess what? no mention of scanning in the 200 page book. When I looked "scanning" up in the index, it told me to look on the cd. When I looked on the cd, nothing. I went to Brother's site and downloaded a manual from there--only to read that you don't get any options on any part of scanning!

If you work at home or in a small office environment, the cost in both money and space of buying single-use machines can be prohibitively expensive. The MFC-210C from Brother delivers printing, copying, scanning, and faxing capabilities, allowing you to free up office space and combine all your important office tasks into one effective machine. With its small 3-picoliter droplet size, the MFC-210C delivers print resolutions of up to 6,000 x 1,200 dpi and print speeds of up to 20 ppm for black and up to 15 ppm for color. The easy-to-use, 100-page, front-loading paper tray accommodates sizes up to 8.5 by 14.0 inches, while a 25-sheet output paper tray accommodates most print jobs easily.
The fax machine is capable of both black and color faxing, and has transmission speeds of up to 6 seconds per page. Twenty auto-dial locations are provided to help you keep track of your most important numbers, and a 70-location broadcasting feature allows you to send one fax to multiple locations. A redial function will automatically attempt to reach the dialed number until you receive an answer, while a 25-page internal memory means that you won't miss important faxes, even when you run out of paper.
The built-in copier is capable of both black and color copying, with copy speeds of up to 17 cpm for black and up to 11 cpm for color. You can reduce or enlarge your copies anywhere from 25% to 400%, while a multi-copy function lets you make up to 99 copies from a single original. The scanner has a 36-bit color depth and 256 levels of grayscale, resulting in crisp colors and subtle grays; and the 600 x 2,400 optical scan resolution provides accurate, true-to-life scans. Additionally, one-touch scan-to-e-mail, scan-to-image, scan-to-OCR, and scan-to-file buttons automate these frequently used scanner functions.
If you are a digital photo enthusiast, you'll be glad to hear that the MFC-210C has a photo capture center that allows you to create photo-quality prints directly from a wide variety of media cards, with or without your PC. Several helpful software tools, including ScanSoft PaperPort, ScanSoft OmniPage OCR Software, and Presto! PageManager Software for Mac, help you get the most out of your prints and scans. The unit connects to your computer via its USB port, while an optional wireless print server can be purchased to use the MFC-210C as a wireless print device. Energy Star compliant, the unit consumes only 20 watts during normal operation and about 3 watts during sleep mode. Compatible with PC and Mac operating systems, the MFC-210C also comes backed with a one-year limited warranty.
What's in the Box MFC210c multifunction, paper tray, ink cartridges (black, cyan, magenta, yellow), CD-ROM with PC fax/drivers and bundled software (ScanSoft PaperPort, ScanSoft OmniPage OCR Software, and Presto! PageManager for Mac), telephone line cord, instructions; USB cable not included

HP D1560 Deskjet Printer Review

HP D1560 Deskjet Printer

To get the newest model of HP's Deskjets, I paid Amazon top dollar ($81.99 plus shipping) for this basic printer, model D1560. Upon installing the two cartridges, types 22 (color) and 21 (black), the display on the computer indicated that the black cartridge was defective. I had ordered another one and opened and tried that one. Also defective! After consulting with 3 technicians, we drew the conclusion that there are TWO TYPES OF CARTRIDGE NO. 21: one with a black label and one with a white label. The printer has a sensor that can tell the difference. This model takes both cartridges with white labels, but what was shipped with the unit was the correct color cartridge and the incorrect black one. I bought the correct one locally, although the number of this new model, D1560, is not printed on the box. Apparently, if the box says D1460 (among many other numbers), as my correct cartridge's box does, it is probably the right one for D1560. This is not at all indicated to Amazon's customers in the information on either the printer or the cartridges. I give it a 3-star evaluation due to this HUGE inconvenience and expense. But now with the right cartridge, it works fine (at least on the first page so far).

I have purchased three, and each one has served me and my businesses greatly. The only concern we have is that the daylight savings time setting is off a little bit. It will automatically change the time but a month after day light savings time has occurred, so we end up changing the time twice for each Day Light Savings time period. Additionally, I just bought one from Sam's Club today for just $199.62 which is a lot cheaper than here on Amazon. You can cut on shipping costs and get it faster. Hope this helps!

I am impressed with the print quality and the features. I have only two complaints: (1) The software installation is horrendous. Instead of using the normal windows installer, HP had to write their own cludgy dohickey. It almost never can find the printer on the network the first time (even if you can ping and load the HTTP interface), requires a reboot, and takes forever farting around doing who-knows-what. Printer driver software should not take 40 minutes to install. (2) It makes startling and disturbing noises. After printing, about 2-3 minutes later when it is nice and quiet, it lets out a gasp like someone who is startled in fright. Also, 3-4 times a day it runs through the initialization process and spends a good 3-4 minutes clattering around noisily. Then a little later it gasps in fright again. This device is not for the jumpy consumer. Combines poorly with heavy caffeine intake.

First, the bad news:
If "printing", for you, means printing out 200 pages in a day, then this printer isn't going to be for you. The cartridge (specifically, the black) probably wouldn't hold out too long, and the printer would end up costing you money. The cartridges aren't cheap.
Now, the good news:
For those of us with light printing needs:
- the ocassional picture
- maps from a driving directions site
- receipt from an online purchase
- paper versions of your taxes
If those are your needs, this printer will serve you well. It's very inexpensive, very quick, and has adequate color. And while the cartridges aren't big, they are more than adequate for the kinds of tasks listed above. I've had mine for over a month and the black cartridge isn't even 1/4 empty. If you're a light user, and you don't mind spending $20 every (I'm guessing) 6 months or so, this is probably a great printer for you.
On the other hand, if you're an author who likes to print out his or her 500-page manuscript several times a month, you might want to look elsewhere for a printer that takes a larger cartridge.

HP OfficeJet 6210 All-in-One Printer Review

HP OfficeJet 6210 All-in-One Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We are a long-established, technology-based counsulting and services company. We have thirty computers and nine HP printers on the LAN. We bought two 6210s for use at work stations for light to medium use (5 - 30 pages per day).
We could not be more pleased with the quality of the printed pages and the operation, but avoid heavy use because of excessive ink cost per page. (This is the reason why the printer cost seems absurdly low.)
Scanner, printer, and fax all worked great. The unit is very, very compact and handsomely styled - a far cry from the earlier all-in-ones that these replaced. The paper feed tray could perhaps be improved. A small amount of care must be used to prevent stuffing the paper in too far.
Print cartidges have very little capacity. The color cartridge has a list price of $32.00 and yields 260 "standard" pages. That's 12 cents per page. For the same standard page our older HP R60 all-in-one delivers 690 pages for a list price of $40.00 or $0.06 per page. I have not investigated black printing costs; but the black cartridge is also small. Googling "cost per page" and printer model will get you the cost info from a third party.

HP Photosmart C6180 All-in-One Printer, Fax, Scanner, and Copier Review

HP Photosmart C6180 All-in-One Printer, Fax, Scanner, and Copier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I needed to replace a number of my single-use devices with AiO and unclutter my desk real estate. I decided on HP because a single quality of HP cartridges: the printer may be off line for quite long time, and when one needs it, just turn it on and voila. It prints without hesitation. My first color printer from Epson, every time upon turning on, used to start long process of heads cleaning, using up half of the cartridges capacity just for cleaning. Still quality of prints was far below expectation. HP cartridges are ready to print this very moment when you need them.
I run selection wizard at Staples site and it indicated to me that my choice shall be HP 6130, although, the 6130 cartridge capacity and yield was scary. Another option having better ink yield was $1000 9000-series machine, with over 50 lb weight. While 6130 would ruin my pocket with the cost of ink, the 9000-series one would definitely ruin my desk. I decided to call HP and review with a technician HP modern ink cartridges and their yield. It seemed that the 02 cartridge yield had an edge over other cartridges. While calculated cost of print on 6130 would be about c9 (ink only, based on yield), the 02 cartridge would produce a print at c3 to c4. The HP technician advised therefore 3130 machine and I went for it. Then in the store, next to 3130 I've seen a 6180 using same 02 cartridges and HAVING Automatic Document Feeder. That was the factor that pushed me into buying C6180.
Installation was a breeze. Everything worked as advertised. After two weeks with 6180 I still like it very much. Ethernet connection allows for all functions of the unit to be accessed from the computer. You can send a fax from the unit or from the computer, or you may mix in one fax input from a computer and from the unit. Very cleaver.
Also, I noticed that the plain paper color prints after printing are dry and the ink is distributed over the paper suface, while on older machines like my last one HP952c the ink penetrated paper through. Perhaps this will be a positive factor on the ink use.
Downside:
So far I found one: the included software bunch. Very slow and messy. Why do I need Photosmart Express, Photosmart Premier and Document viewer I have no idea, but these programs happen to be very ambitious. They produce about 25 different program modules requesting simultaneous access to the internet and server privileges. To my taste it's much too much. I'm affraid that HP invaded my computer and tries to pry the control over it out of my fingers.

HP Photosmart 8250 Printer (Q3470A#ABA) Review

HP Photosmart 8250 Printer (Q3470A#ABA)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent printer for the serious photographer. The images are clear, sharp, and crisp, and professional in every way, at least to my amateur eye. I am a picky amateur photographer, and I bought this printer so that I could easily print 8x10, 5x7, and 4x6 photos from my several digital cameras. This printer does the job. This is a beautifully engineered and solid piece of equipment.
Some technical issues. Beware, when the ink first prints, it smears easily, so let it dry for a few minutes--it dries quickly enough. I am happy to say that the photo download from the card reader slot (I measured it on the CF card reader--I haven't tried it for my SD cards yet) is lightning fast, as compared to my older HP printers, I guess that is the USB 2.0 that this device features. This is a welcome improvement--earlier HP printers lagged behind even cheap card readers in speed. No more.
So far my print feeds have been flawless and jam-free. You can effortlessly switch between 4x6 and 8x10 prints, and the feeds are fine. (Haven't tried 5x7s yet, but I expect no problems.) When you first take the printer out of the box it will prompt you to put paper in the printer and let it test the ink cartridges. Beware--you need to install them first. This only takes a second, and these are the most foolproof printer cartridges I have ever seen, but the printer does not tell you that the cartridges are not yet installed, at least not until you try to run the diagnostic. No big deal; I installed them, and the printer calibrated itself perfectly!
The printer installed perfectly and effortlessly the very first time. Simply insert the supplied CD and follow the instructions. Remember not to insert the (not supplied!) USB2 cable into the computer until the software prompts you to do so.
It appears to me that some of the other reviewers (here on Amazon) of this printer made the same initial mistake I made. Specifically, here is the deal: this printer can detect what kind of paper you are feeding it (if it is HP paper anyway)--it detects it from a code on the back of the paper and it adjusts the ink application accordingly. Further, this printer is very precise as to how it applies ink to a given paper type. So if you try to manually tell it what kind of paper you are using, and if you guess wrong, you will get lousy pictures with the ink incorrectly applied. Once I figured out the rather amazing fact that this printer KNOWS what kind of paper it is printing on, I started getting wonderful pictures. (It literally never occurred to me that it could do this--I had to, you guessed it, read the manual to find this out). This is cool--you can insert different kinds of HP photo paper in the same stack, e.g. matte, glossy, etc. and expect to get perfect pictures without having to look in the printer to see what paper is next. Just tell it on the print menu to automatically select the paper type. I love the 21st century!
Personally, I think that HP has hit a home run with this one. While I cannot compare this one to its rivals from Epson or Canon (I have not reviewed these), I can say that I am completely satisfied. Recommended.

HP PhotoSmart 8450 Inkjet Printer Review

I picked the 8450 up after my Canon i950 died. I initially set it up in the kitchen so my wife could try it out. It's been 5 days now and the printer is still in the kitchen. With the media card slots and on board photo editing my wife has no need to use a computer. The red-eye removal works better than any software package I have ever used. The photos that print out are extremely close to that of dye-sublimation printers. The only cartridge that runs out the fastest is the Gray cartridge #100. The tri-color #97 and the photo color #99 are still reporting 3/4 full. This is after printing around (40) 4x6 photos and (15) 8.5 x 11 full page prints.
Definately use the HP Glossy paper. I originally printed on the leftover Canon Photo Paper Plus which was impressive. When I tried the HP Glossy paper, I was blown away by the difference. The Canon paper had a yellowish tinge to it which covered up the light pinks and blues, and the flesh tones looked a bit jaundiced. The HP paper brought out the colors as I have never seen before. Absolutely perfect right down to the subtle pinks in the flesh tones.

Xerox 8560MFP/D Phaser 8560 Multi-Function Color Printer Review

Xerox 8560MFP/D Phaser 8560 Multi-Function Color Printer
Average Reviews:

You will stand around waiting for this machine each time you use it. This goes for copying, faxing and scanning. This is due to the ink sticks it uses and it has to "warm up" even to send a fax. The Xerox scanning soft ware is poorly designed as well. This is a waste of time and infuriating when you need to get things done quickly. Poor value overall, and after 2 years the machine jams on every page printed now. I am not even going to call out the repair guy. If I can get $50 selling this on ebay it will be good ridance for a dog of a performer. Buy a Fujitsu Scan Snap S510 if you want an excellent scanner.

The standard paper capacity of 625 sheets and maximum capacity of 1,675 keep things running smoothly in your office by minimizing down-time. This feature enables easy and efficient group sharing of important data. And don't let troubleshooting problems slow you down. The unrivaled support and service from Xerox will take care of you every step of the way. There's also no need to send jobs outside of your office, a process that takes much longer and costs more money than simply producing them in-house. The Phaser 8560MFP comes equipped with software, like Adobe PostScript 3, and automatic color enhancement tools that ensure reliable and accurate prints, so you can create professional results without leaving your office. Secure, Intuitive Operation Because snags in production and security can slow you and your business down, the Xerox designs each of its machines with built-in help for both troubleshooting problems and preventing them before they start. Automated online troubleshooting with PhaserSMART gets you back on-track fast. And as you're working, Xerox PrintingScout technology provides instant on-screen alert notification when a print job needs attention, while Xerox CentreWare IS lets you access device and job status as well as accounting information directly from your computer. The "Saved Print" feature keeps all prints secure by mandating the entry of a PIN code on the front panel before it prints. And finally, this system electronically "shreds" data stored on the hard drive as part of routine job processing. For added peace of mind, the Phaser 8560MFP comes with a one-year, on-site warranty. What's in the Box Multi-function unit pre-loaded with one solid ink stick of each color (capacity: up to 1,300 pages per stick), solid ink rainbow pack (one stick of each color, capacity: up to 1,300 pages per stick), maintenance kit (capacity: 10,000 pages), telephone cord, power cord and software and documentation.

Canon PIXMA MP160 All-In-One Photo Printer (Gray) Review

Canon PIXMA MP160 All-In-One Photo Printer (Gray)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was reasonably happy with my 5-month old printer until I discovered how Canon's ink management works. These comments are not necessarily specific to the MP-160 and some are probably relevant to any printer using Canon's new chipped cartridges. I learned a lot from a Canon MP-150 (v. similar to the 160) service manual obtained from the net.
Here are my beefs:
--the driver provides only 4 warning levels: 70%, 40%, "low," (whatever that means) and out. After "low" comes on, I've been able to continue printing for a long time, but I'm afraid to start an important job because I don't know how much ink is really there. And I now realize I replaced my first color cartridge prematurely - when the "low" light came on - not realizing I could probably go for quite a lot longer without replacing the cartridge. FWIW, I got into the service readout. I'm still on my 1st standard black cartridge (low warning light is on) after having printed 368 pages since I got the printer (the vast majority in black economy mode). Canon estimates 355 pages/black tank in standard mode. I'm on my 2nd standard color cartridge (low warning light is on; having replaced the 1st prematurely). Canon estimates 308 standard sheets/color tank and 120 4x6's. I've printed 9 photos.
--If I understand the MP-150 service manual, a standard black cartridge contains 43 gm of ink. The printer periodically cleans itself and uses 0.1 gm of ink when it does. My service readout says that my printer has cleaned itself 10-13 times and if the MP 160 uses the same amount of ink to clean itself, that means that 3% of my ink has gone to cleaning. This system of ink management would also explain why my color ink level suddenly went from 40% to "low" even when I hadn't recently been printing in color. I was probably near "low," the printer cleaned itself and since there are only 4 warning levels, the ink level appeared to drop suddenly for no reason.
--Canon has made it difficult to refill their cartridges or use 3rd party cartridges because the ink monitoring system is disabled unless you're using a new Canon cartridge. So if you use a refilled or 3rd party cartridge, you won't know how much ink you have left.
Very telling: the MP-150's product life, per the service manual, is 6000 pages (about half in black, half in color) or 3 years of use, whichever comes first. That is, Canon **expects the MP-150 to fail in 3 years or less**. This doesn't bode well for my MP-160.
I did not spend much on the printer. In fact, I'll pay more for a couple sets of ink cartridges than I paid for the printer. It seems to me that by building low-end printers with very limited product life and by making it hard to use generic inks, Canon is encouraging us to fill landfills with their printers.

The Canon PIXMA MP160 All-In-One Photo Printer lets you print, copy and scan photos and documents quickly and easily. Whether working from the home office, helping a child with his/her school project or simply printing out pictures from a family trip, Canon provides solutions that satisfies consumers' preferences in look, feel, design and functionality. With a sleek, slanted design featuring rounded corners and a space-saving low profile, the stylish MP160 livens up any home or small business office. As more and more consumers begin to familiarize themselves with the benefits of a multi-function unit for the home, the demands go beyond just having the best technology. Ease of use and reliability have come to the forefront. The MP160 is designed to be extremely user friendly while delivering optimum results time and time again.Fast, Reliable Home Printing The MP160 is a system that lets you get more done, right at home. It allows you to print beautiful, long-lasting photos, along with copies that are truer to your originals' images and text. The unique Z-Lid lets you produce clear, complete scans even of thick originals like personal notebooks. You can even print photos directly from a PictBridge compatible camera or DV camcorder -- no computer required! With home-office AIO printers becoming everyday household items and digital photography's popularity increasing by leaps and bounds, Canon has created a new generation of multi-function printers, like the MP160, that further link the photographic world to that of the home office. This multi-function unit harmonizes printing functionality and performance with imaging excellence and a sense of home decor/style, making it a great long term investment. This four-color printer, with true-pigmented black and high intensity color inks, is ideal for printing text, web pages and photos. Affordable and cost-efficient, the MP160 offers resolution as high as 4800 by 1200 color dots per inch (dpi) and the ability to copy up to 22 pages per minute (ppm) in monochrome and 17 ppm in color. Borderless photo printing is equally fast: 4 x 6 inch photos print in less than a minute. For added convenience, the MP160 also allows for printing photos without a PC, thanks to the PictBridge port.Sharp, Crisp Copying The MP160 employs advanced copy technology to help give you vivid reproductions of original images and documents. Dual Color Gamut Processing Technology improves color accuracy by independently controlling brightness, hue, and other elements to make sure that there are minimal differences between the original and the copy. In addition, with Text and Image Separation Technology, the system can actually differentiate text from an image, making black text and fine lines darker and sharp. Now when black text appears over an image, the text on the following generations of copies can be virtually as clear as the first. These technologies plus hardware improvements in scanning and printing can help make a copy almost indistinguishable from the original.Quick and Easy Scanning Thanks to the MP160's multiple capabilities, there's no need to purchase a separate scanner that will take up extra space in your office. Instead, you can rely on this compact unit to scan with a high resolution of up to 600 by 1200 dpi (optical) and 19,200 by 19,200 dpi (interpolated). With a 48-bit internal color depth and the capability to deal with documents up to 8.5 x 11.7 inches, the MP160 will give you professional results in minutes.ChromaLife100 Technology For Image Permanence The MP160 uses the Canon ChromaLife100 system, including the FINE print head technology for great photo printing. When using select genuine Canon photo papers and inks, prints can resist fading for up to 100 years when stored in an archival quality photo album. The up to 100-year-lifespan rivals that of many traditional film based photos, long considered by consumers to be the benchmark for image permanence. Prints produced on Canon Photo Paper Pro with ChromaLife100-compatible inks have an up to 10-year gas fastness when exposed to open air. In addition, ChromaLife100 prints, when created using genuine Canon photo paper like Photo Paper Pro or Photo Paper Plus Glossy, have up to 30-year light fastness when displayed under glass.FINE Engineering and the Inkjet Nozzle Launched globally by Canon in 1999, the Canon Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) advanced print head technology is one of the keys to the impressive speed and high photo quality in Canon PIXMA photo all-in-one printers. Canon FINE uses a groundbreaking high-performance multi-nozzle print engine that ejects consistent and microscopic ink droplets. The results are high-resolution photos with detail and clarity in less time. The MP160 comes with a one-year limited warranty. What's in the Box Pixma MP160 photo all-in-one, power cord, cartridges (PG-40 black, CL-41 color), easy setup instructions, document kit (setup software and user's guide CD-ROM, registration card, and cross sell sheet).

HP P2015D Monochrome Laserjet Printer Review

HP P2015D Monochrome Laserjet Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the 2015d directly from HP. The automatic (vs. manual) duplex function was my main purchase criteria, thus the choice of the 2015d rather than the 2015. Specs at the HP site stated that the 2015d is "certified for Windows Vista" and is "Windows Vista ready". These statements are misleading: Vista does not support the automatic duplex function of this printer. After many hours of effort, I called HP tech support and they confirmed/shared this info post-purchase.

Epson Stylus NX510 Wireless Color Inkjet All-in-One Printer (C11CA48201) Review

Epson Stylus NX510 Wireless Color Inkjet All-in-One Printer (C11CA48201)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The printer works fine for the most part. Good quality and the wireless network is a really nice feature so you can eliminate cables. I was actually fairly happy with it. The menu systems on the front panel are extremely crude and hard to navigate, but that was really my only gripe.
However, this printer has proven the most irritating design in one respect. When you reach a low ink level, the front control panel is completely frozen giving you a message to "Relace Ink Cartidges now".
You can no longer scan, fax, or do anything with this device until you go buy ink (can someone at epson please explain that one to me? Why can't I scan? That doesn't use any ink!!!).
Then just to make it even more irritating, if you are low in black ink (like I am) you can't even print in other colors. My status monitor just sits there on my computer telling me that my ink cartridges are low (duh, I know that by now epson thank you very much).
...and as the frustration level gets really high, do you think I can close that window so I can move on to other things? Uh...NO. That little irritating status monitor can not be closed, only minimized! So it's going to sit here on my computer until I go buy a black ink cartridge.
ARGH!!!!
I guess I didn't buy a wireless color inkete all in one printer...I bought an irritating little sister who constantly tells me "buy ink...buy ink...buy ink..."
